Roles determine what users can see and do. For a matrix comparing the main roles, see the role comparison table. Specialized roles like translator, reviewer, and trainer aren't in the matrix because they each carry a single permission. They're detailed in the Specific roles section below.

Learner
Learners can play courses and paths. The best resource for learners is the learnerβs guide β
They can also:
- Search for content β
- Use the mobile app β
- Write in the forums and newsfeeds β
- Bookmark content and create playlists β
- Edit their personal settings β
Coach
Coaches oversee their group. They can:
- Search for users (not only content) β
- Create path sessions β
- Share courses & paths β
- Manage group newsfeeds β
- Track group statistics β
- Track user statistics β
- Track course, path, and path session statistics β
- Send reminders to users β
A coach does not inherit the permissions of an editor. Coaches can invite users from their group to a path session they created, but they cannot create a path unless they are also an editor.
Coaches cannot add or remove users. That requires at least the user admin role.
To allow a user to create a path and set up sessions to enroll learners without full admin access, assign them both the contributor and coach roles, or editor and coach roles, for their group.
Contributor
Contributors can create content, and update their own content. They can:
- Search for users (not only content) β
- Create courses β
- Create paths β
- Create path sessions β
- Create projects & learning needs β
- Moderate course forums and path forums β
- Translate content (if they have the Globalization Solution) β
- Track their own results on content they authored β
Contributors only see their own results, even on the courses and paths of which they are the main author or a co-author. To let a contributor see the results of all learners in a path session, add the contributor as a co-instructor of that session.
To allow a user to create a path and set up sessions to enroll learners without full admin access, assign them both the contributor and coach roles, or editor and coach roles, for their group.
Editor
Editors can create content, and update their own content and the content of their group. They can:
- Search for users (not only content) β
- Create courses β
- Create paths β
- Create path sessions β
- Create projects & learning needs β
- Moderate course forums and path forums β
- Translate content (if they have the Globalization Solution) β
- Track course and path statistics β
An editor does not inherit the permissions of a coach. Editors can create a path session, but cannot invite users from their group unless they are also a coach.

User admin
User admins handle basic user operations. They can:
- Search for users (not only content) β
- Add and remove users in their group β
- Reset a userβs password β
User admins do not have access to statistics.
Group admin
Group admins manage their group and all users within it. They have the combined permissions of a user admin, a coach, and an editor, and can also:
- Create groups β
- Edit group settings β
- Configure group layout β
- Change the role of a user β
- Edit a userβs profile β
- Add a value to a custom field in a user profile β
- Manage skills for their users β
- Track statistics for their group and its subgroups β
A group admin on a group is automatically added as a group admin in all its subgroups. The learner, coach, editor, and user admin roles, however, do not cascade.
Platform admin
Platform admins have access to everything, except plans and billing management. They have group admin permissions on all groups. They can also:
- Configure SSO β
- Edit the platform settings β
- Configure the layout of the homepage β
- Customize the mobile app β
- Create custom fields β
- Manage skills β
Owner
Owners can do all that platform admins can, and also:
There can be only one owner per platform.
Specific roles
Specific roles are specialized permissions assigned to a user in addition to their main role (such as learner, editor, or admin). They apply to a single course, path, or a specific function (for example, translating content or managing specific users).
Some specific roles can be given to any user. Others require the user to already hold a certain main role, such as editor.
Main author (course)
Main authors have the permissions of an editor on a specific course.
Only admins, editors, and contributors can be the main author of a course.
For the statistics main authors can see, see Statistics visibility.

Co-author (course)
Co-authors have the permissions of an editor on a specific course, but cannot archive, delete or duplicate that course.
Any user can be added as a co-author of a course, but they are not automatically replaced if they are deleted.
For the statistics co-authors can see, see Statistics visibility.

Main author (path)
Main authors have the permissions of an editor on a specific path.
Only admins, editors, and contributors can be the main author of a path.
For the statistics main authors can see, see Statistics visibility.

Co-author (path)
Co-authors have the permissions of an editor on a specific path, but cannot archive, delete or duplicate that path.
Any user can be added as a co-author of a path, but they are not automatically replaced if they are deleted.
For the statistics co-authors can see, see Statistics visibility.
If a co-author creates a session, they automatically become the instructor of that session (they are given instructor rights and given the right to edit that session), however, additional rights are needed to enroll learners or add the session to the group catalog.

Manager
Managers have extended permissions over specific users, regardless of those usersβ groups. They can:
- Track statistics for their managees β
- Send reminders to their managees β
- Manage skills for their managees β
Any user can be added as a manager.
See how to change managers β
Main instructor and co-instructor of a path session
Instructors of a path session can edit or delete the session, even if they donβt belong to the owner group of the path session. They can:
- Edit or delete their path session β
- Fill classroom slot attendance β
- Track the statistics of their path sessions β
Any user can be added as an instructor.
See how to add instructors to a path session β
Translator
Translators can translate content:
Reviewer
Reviewers evaluate courses within projects. They can:
- Review a project course β
- Post an internal comment in a course β
- Track course and path statistics (if they also have the coach role) β
See how to assign reviewers β
This role is only available with Academies.
Trainer
Trainers can manage classroom slots:
