Create a path

  • Updated

A path is a training object containing steps. Steps can be courses, classrooms, other paths, or assessments.

Admins, editors, and contributors can create paths.

The workflow for creating a path is the following:

  1. Create the path.
  2. Verify the first session info.

Create the path

  1. At the top right of the homepage, click Create → Path.
    • Note: When creating a path in a subgroup, the default owner group may differ from your current subgroup. The platform picks the default owner group by looking at groups where you can create a path,  and prioritizing public groups, higher-level groups, and larger groups.
  2. Enter a Title and Description.
  3. Optional: Change the owner group.
  4. Optional: Change the main author.
  5. Optional: Add co-authors.
  6. In the Build your training section, click Configure settings.
  7. Enable or disable Custom enrollment email.
    1. enabled.png Enabled: Learners will receive a customized email. Once enabled, you can customize the enrollment email for this path. For more information, see Customize the enrollment email for a path.
    2. disabled.png Disabled: Learners will receive the automated enrollment email.
  8. Enable or disable Linear Progression.
    • enabled.png Enabled: Learners must follow the steps in a defined order.
    • disabled.png Disabled: Learners can follow the steps in the order of their choice.
  9. Optional: Enable or disable Mandatory replay.
    • enabled.png Enabled: Learners must complete the courses within the path session, even if they have already completed the courses elsewhere.
    • disabled.png Disabled: Learners are not required to complete the courses within the path session if they have already completed the courses elsewhere.
  10. Optional: Select an Estimated duration.
    1. Enable Estimated duration.
    2. Click the Estimated duration dropdown menu.
    3. Select a duration type: Month(s), Weeks(s), Day(s), Hour(s), or Minute(s).
    4. Enter a number in the Estimated duration field.
  11. Add path steps:
    • Add a course.
      • In the section Build your training, on the right of Add a step, click Course and select one or more courses.
      • The path will make courses available to enrolled learners when they reach the step (linear paths) or at enrollment (non-linear paths).
    • Add a classroom.
      • In the section Build your training, on the right of Add a step, click Classroom and create a classroom.
      • The path will allow learners who self-enroll in the path through the catalog to select a classroom slot. For learners who are enrolled directly into the path, users who have edit permissions on the path or path session must add them to a classroom slot.
      • Learn more about classrooms →
    • Add a path.
      • In the section Build your training, on the right of Add a step, click Path and select one or more paths.
      • Adding a path step to a path will automatically enroll learners to the subpath.
    • Add an assessment.
      • In the section Build your training, on the right of Add a step, click Assessment and configure the assessment.
      • The assessment step is triggered once every preceding step has been either successfully completed, marked as optional, or is itself an assessment step. At that point, the assessor needs to check the learner's work. Assessors receive a notification when a learner reaches the assessment step. Learn more about the assessment step →
    • Add a quiz.
    • Schedule a custom email.
    • Schedule a Slack message.
    • Schedule a Microsoft Teams message.
  12. Optional: Adjust step options.
    • For more info on adding, configuring, reordering, and deleting steps, go to Edit a path.
  13. Optional: Add a positioning quiz.
  14. Optional: Add a certificate to a path.
  15. Verify first session info.
  16. At the bottom right of the path creation page, click Create New Path.

If you’re using a Free Trial platform, replace the first step with these:

  1. At the top of the homepage, click Paths.
  2. At the top right, click plus.svg.

See Edit a path to learn more about path options.

Once you hit save, the platform will create the first path session. After that, you can create and share more path sessions and add more classroom slots.

Platform admins, group admins, editors, the main author, and co-authors can set path step options.

To adjust a step's options:

Verify the first session info

The path automatically generates the first session when a new path is created. Verify that the session info is correct before saving the new path:

  1. From the project creation screen, scroll to the Enroll learners section.
  2. Optional: Change the session group owner.
  3. Optional: Edit or add path session instructors.
  4. Enter a session title in the Title field.
  5. Select a Start date.
    1. Click the Start field and select a date
    2. Click out of the field to save.
  6. Optional: Select an End date.

You can enroll learners in the path session or add it to a group catalog before or after you create the path.

  • If your path has classrooms and you plan to use the automatic registration option, wait to enroll learners and groups until AFTER you've created all the classroom slots.
