Activate or deactivate mandatory replay

  • Updated

Admins, editors, and contributors can activate or deactivate mandatory replay on a path.

Mandatory replay requires learners to complete all non-optional courses within the path session, even if they have already completed them elsewhere on the platform. Use it when you need session-specific completion records:

  • Compliance training
  • Updated content
  • Certification paths
  • Recurring surveys where the same course is reused across multiple paths

Without mandatory replay, completion data from a previous session of the same path (open or closed) is automatically carried over to the new one. Learners appear as already completed in the new session without replaying the content, and their time spent, scores, and completion dates reflect the original session rather than the current one.

Activate mandatory replay on a path

Activating mandatory replay ensures that learner completions are recorded within the session, independently of any activity outside the path.

  1. At the top of the homepage, click Paths.
  2. On the right side of the path row, click pen.svg Edit.
  3. In the Build your training section, click Configure settings.
  4. Enable the Mandatory replay option.

Mandatory replay is not inherited by subpaths and must be enabled individually for each subpath.

Once you activate mandatory replay:

  • Learners must complete all non-optional courses and classrooms within the path session, even if they previously completed those steps elsewhere. Courses completed outside the path are not counted toward path progress. Classrooms completed in another path session are not counted toward path progress.
  • Courses in the path can only be played in the path context. If a learner tries to access a course from the catalog, they are redirected to complete it within the path.
  • A learner who completed a path course outside the path context will have a status of To retake until they replay it within the session.
  • A learner's status is Successful only when they have completed all courses within the session, reached the minimum score in all mandatory courses that require one, and completed them within the time limits.
  • Path statistics (time spent, scores, and attempt counts) reflect in-session activity only.

If the path also has linear progression enabled, learners must complete steps in order and replay all mandatory courses within the session. If learners have already started courses from the catalog, they will be redirected to the path context, which may disrupt their progress if they were mid-course.

No email notification is sent to learners when this setting is changed.

Activating mandatory replay on a running session

Activating mandatory replay on a session that is already running immediately affects all enrolled learners, including those who have already started the path.

Learners who completed mandatory steps outside the path context will see those steps marked as To retake. Their overall path progress and status are recalculated immediately. Learners who have already completed all mandatory steps within the path session are not affected.

Deactivate mandatory replay on a path

When mandatory replay is deactivated, prior course completions are recognised within the path. Use this when requiring learners to replay content they have already completed would not add value.

  1. At the top of the homepage, click Paths.
  2. On the right side of the path row, click pen.svg Edit.
  3. In the Build your training section, click Configure settings.
  4. Disable the Mandatory replay option.

Once deactivated, if a learner previously completed a course outside the path, that course is automatically marked as completed within the path. Or, if the learner completed a classroom in another path session, that classroom is automatically marked as completed within the path. Learners are not required to replay content they have already finished.

The completion date recorded in the session will match the original completion date, which may predate the session's creation date. Similarly, the score and time spent will reflect the original values from the first completion.

No email notification is sent to learners when this setting is changed.

Deactivating mandatory replay on a running session

Deactivating mandatory replay on a session that is already running immediately affects all enrolled learners, including those who have already started the path.

Learners who had a To retake status due to mandatory replay will have their prior completions recognised, and their progress and status are updated immediately. Completion data already recorded within the session is retained.
