Edit a path step

  • Updated

Admins, editors, contributors, and the path main author and co-authors can edit path steps.

A path step can be a course, a classroom, a sub-path, or an assessment.

Mark a step as optional

Marking a step as optional allows learners to complete the path without completing that step. This applies to all learners enrolled in the path, and is available for course, classroom, and path steps.

  1. At the top of the homepage, click Paths.
  2. On the right side of the path row, click pen.svg Edit.
  3. In the Build your training section, click on a step.
  4. In the Options panel, enable the Optional content option.

Set a relative due date for a step

A relative due date is a soft deadline for a step, calculated from the learner's enrollment date. Learners can still complete the step after the due date.

Relative due dates appear in the path statistics dashboard, on each step in the path page, and on the homepage if the path has been started. If the path has several steps with relative due dates, the homepage shows the furthest date.

This option is available for course, classroom, and path steps.

  1. At the top of the homepage, click Paths.
  2. On the right side of the path row, click pen.svg Edit.
  3. In the Build your training section, click on a step.
  4. In the Options panel, enable the Relative due date option.
  5. Click the duration type dropdown menu.
  6. Select a duration type: Month(s), Week(s), or Day(s).
  7. Enter a number in the Relative due date field.

To remove a relative due date, disable Relative due date in the Options panel.

Configure automatic registration for classroom slots

New learners automatically register in the next open classroom slot when enrolled in the path. This option is enabled by default on new classroom steps.

To disable automatic registration:

  1. At the top of the homepage, click Paths.
  2. On the right side of the path row, click pen.svg Edit.
  3. In the Build your training section, click on the classroom step.
  4. In the Options panel, disable the Automatic registration option.

Control when learners see correct answers

By default, learners see the correct answer after each individual question. You can change this to show correct answers only after the course is complete.

This option is not available for SCORM courses.

  1. At the top of the homepage, click Paths.
  2. On the right side of the path row, click pen.svg Edit.
  3. In the Build your training section, click on the course step.
  4. In the Options panel, enable the Correct Answer setting, then select one of the following options:
    • After each question: Learners see the correct answers after they submit their answers.
    • At the end of the course: Learners see the correct answers after they complete the course.
    • At the end of the course, if successful: Learners see the correct answers only after they complete the course successfully.

Control when learners see forum and reactions

By default, learners see the forum and reactions after each activity. You can change this to show the forum and reactions only after learners complete all course questions.

This option is not available for SCORM courses.

  1. At the top of the homepage, click Paths.
  2. On the right side of the path row, click pen.svg Edit.
  3. In the Build your training section, click the course step.
  4. In the Options panel, enable the Forum & reactions option.
  5. Select one of the following options:
    • After each activity: Learners see the forum and reactions after each activity.
    • At the end of the course: Learners see the forum and reactions after they complete the course.
    • At the end of the course, if successful: Learners see the forum and reactions only after they complete the course successfully.

Set a time limit for a course

You can set a minimum or maximum duration for a course step. This option is not available for SCORM courses.

A maximum time limit locks the course at the end of the defined time and lets the learner proceed to the next step. Learners can see the names of remaining activities but cannot access them. The timer at the top of the course shows the remaining time.

A minimum time limit prevents learners from proceeding to the next step until the time is up, even if they finish the course early.

  1. At the top of the homepage, click Paths.
  2. On the right side of the path row, click pen.svg Edit.
  3. In the Build your training section, click on the course step.
  4. In the Options panel, enable the Time limit option.
  5. Select Min or Max, then enter the number of hours and minutes.

To remove the time limit, disable Time limit in the Options panel.

Set a minimum score for a course

See Set a minimum score for a course in a path →

Limit the number of attempts for a course

When a learner reaches the maximum number of attempts, they cannot retry the course and can only close it.

  • In a linear path, the learner's progress is blocked. They must be unenrolled (by themselves if they self-enrolled, or by a user who can manage the session) and re-enrolled in another session.
  • In a non-linear path, the learner can continue the other steps in the path.

The number of remaining attempts appears on the path homepage and the course homepage.

  1. At the top of the homepage, click Paths.
  2. On the right side of the path row, click pen.svg Edit.
  3. In the Build your training section, click on a course step.
  4. In the Options panel, scroll down to Attempts and enable it.
  5. Enter the maximum number of attempts, then click outside the field.

To remove the limit, disable Attempts in the Options panel.

Set when a course becomes available

You can set an availability date for a course step if no learner has finished it yet. Learners who started the course before the availability date lose access to it immediately.

If the course is part of an equivalency pool, learners who completed an equivalent course are not restricted by the availability date.

  1. At the top of the homepage, click Paths.
  2. On the right side of the path row, click pen.svg Edit.
  3. In the Build your training section, click on a course step.
  4. In the Options panel, scroll down to Availability and enable it.
  5. Enter the number of days, weeks, or months.
  6. Select whether the duration applies after the session's start date or after the learner's enrollment date.

Learners will be able to access the course step starting at 12:00 AM (in their local time) on the availability date.

To remove the availability date, disable Availability in the Options panel.

Edit an assessment step

Learners can resume the path regardless of the assessment result. To add an assessment step first, see Add an assessment step →.

  1. At the top of the homepage, click Paths.
  2. On the right side of the path row, click pen.svg Edit.
  3. In the Build your training section, click the assessment step.
  4. Enter the assessment Title.
  5. (Optional) In Instructions for the learners, enter instructions to help learners understand the assessment.
  6. From the Assessed by list, select the assessors:
    • Instructors are the default assessors.
    • Managers can be selected instead.
  7. (Optional) In Instructions for the assessor, enter information to help the assessor.
  8. Select how the assessor validates the learner's progress:
    • Fail/pass validation: the assessor marks the assessment as passed or failed.
    • Score to reach: enter the minimum score learners must achieve to pass. The minimum score is optional.
  9. To require learners to pass the assessment to receive a path certificate, enable Examination (certificate required). This does not prevent learners from completing the path.
  10. Click Save.
