Change the parent of a group

  • Updated

Administrators can change the parent of a group, if they have the administrator role on the new group.

The parent of the platform group cannot be changed.

Learn more about group hierarchy in Create a group.

  1. In the left sidebar of the homepage, click on a group.
  2. At the top right of the main section, click settings.svg Settings.
  3. In the left column, click Hierarchy.
  4. In the Parent group section, click edit.svg Edit on the right of the parent group name.
  5. Select the new parent group, then on the bottom right, click CONFIRM.
  6. In the warning dialog box, click CONFIRM to save your change.

Consequences

Changing the parent of a group will have two main consequences for its members: changing the visibility, and changing the admins.

Visibility

The location of a group determines, for its members, who they can see and what messages they can see. Read more about what a group member can see, depending on the group privacy →

If you change the parent of a group (and therefore, its location), you may also change the list of its publicly connected groups.

Admins

Remember: admins of a group automatically have admin permissions on all groups below it.

If you change the parent of a group, some admins may gain access to that group, and some admins may lose access.
