About widget audience

  • Updated

Admins can control who sees specific widgets on the homepage and group pages by setting audiences:

  • Platform admins can set audiences for carousel slides, gallery blocks, and curated catalogs shown on the homepage and across any group pages.
  • Group admins can set an audience for carousel slides, gallery blocks, and curated catalogs on their own group page.

Widget audience is applied automatically:

  • On the web app
  • In the Discover tab on mobile

You define an audience using Groups, Roles, and User Custom Fields.

Default visibility

A widget on the homepage or group pages is visible to all users unless you set an audience.

Applicable widgets

You can set an audience for:

  • Carousel slides (each slide can have its own audience)
  • Gallery blocks (each slide can have its own audience)
  • Curated catalogs

Widget audience logic

OR logic within a single condition

Within a single condition (whether it's Groups, Roles, or a single User Custom Field), a user only needs to match one of the selected values.

Example: You select Groups A and B. Users in A or B see the widget.

AND logic across multiple conditions

When you set multiple conditions for an audience, users must match all selected conditions to see the widget.

Examples:

  • You select Group A and Role: Coaches. Only users who are in Group A and have the coach role see the widget.
  • You select Group A and B, and Role: Coaches. Users who are in either Group A or B and have the coach role see the widget.

Unconfigured conditions

Any condition left unconfigured includes all users for that condition.

Example: You only select Group A. All users in Group A see the widget, regardless of roles or custom fields.

Empty conditions

If a condition has no valid values (for example, because the only selected group was deleted), it matches no users, and the widget is hidden from everyone.

Example: You configure an audience to only include Group B, but later delete Group B. The widget does not appear for any users because the audience contains an invalid value.

Widget audience conditions

Groups

You can include (Is) or exclude (Is not) one or more groups. You cannot select both Is and Is not at the same time in a single audience.

  • Include (Is): Users must belong to at least one of the selected groups to see the widget.
    • Example: You select Group A with Include (Is). Only users in Group A see the widget.
  • Exclude (Is not): Users who belong only to the excluded groups will not see the widget. If a user belongs to an excluded group and at least one unselected group, they will still see the widget.
    • Example: A user belongs to Groups A, B, and C. If the audience is set to Group is not B and C_, the user will still see the widget because they are also a member of Group A._

Roles

You can select one or more roles. The meaning depends on whether you include groups and the type of page:

  • If no groups are selected:
    • Homepage: Users with the role in any group can see the widget.
    • Group page: Users must have the role in the group of the page to see the widget.
  • If one or more groups are selected:
    • Users must have the role within at least one of the selected groups to see the widget.

User custom fields

Selecting a single user custom field

You can select one or more values in a single user custom field using Is or Is not logic. You cannot select both Is and Is not at the same time in a single audience.

  • Is: Users must match at least one of the selected values to see the content.
  • Is not: Users who match only the selected values will not see the widget.

Example: You include (Is) the custom field Location, with the values London or Paris. Users matching London OR Paris see the widget.

Selecting multiple user custom fields

You can also select multiple custom fields. Across multiple fields, users must match all selected custom fields (AND logic). Within each field, OR logic applies.

Example: You include (Is) multiple custom fields:

  • Custom Field 1: Location = London or Paris
  • Custom Field 2: Department = Marketing

Users see the widget if they match:

  • Location: London or Paris AND
  • Department: Marketing
User Location Department Sees widget?
1 London Marketing ✅ Yes
2 Paris Marketing ✅ Yes
3 London Sales ❌ No
4 Berlin Marketing ❌ No

Limits

The following limits apply:

  • Maximum audiences per homepage or group page: 1,000
  • Maximum groups per audience: 1,000
  • Maximum user custom fields per audience: 1,000
  • Maximum user custom field values per audience: 1,000
