Configure a carousel

  • Updated

Platform admins can configure a carousel on the homepage or any group page. Group admins can configure a carousel for their specific group page.

A carousel is a slideshow that welcomes learners, showcases training content, provides quick links to internal or external resources, or shares important messages with a call to action. To show items side by side rather than one slide at a time, use a gallery instead.

A page can display several carousels, and you can change their placement relative to other widgets. For more information, see Configure the layout of a group page and Configure the layout of the homepage. A group's carousel does not carry over to its subgroups. If your organization uses the Globalization solution, carousels can be translated into each user’s preferred language. For more information, see Translate a carousel.

Learners can view carousels on the web app, on the homepage and on group pages they can access. Slides advance automatically, and learners can use the arrows to navigate manually or pause the carousel. On mobile apps, under the Discover tab, learners can only view carousels created on group pages. Because of the smaller screen, postcard slides are not displayed, and poster slides only display their image and title, without the description.

  1. Access the page layout configuration panel:
    • For the homepage: In the left sidebar, click group-page-layout.svg Homepage layout.
    • For a group page: In the left sidebar, hover over a group and click group-page-layout.svg Configure page layout.
  2. In the Configure page layout panel on the right, in the Add section, click Carousel.
  3. In the bottom-right corner, click Apply.

The carousel is only displayed once it has slides. Until then, it shows an Empty badge in the panel and is hidden from the page. To add slides, see Add a carousel slide.

You can add up to 100 slides per carousel.

  1. Access the page layout configuration panel:
    • For the homepage: In the left sidebar, click group-page-layout.svg Homepage layout.
    • For a group page: In the left sidebar, hover over a group and click group-page-layout.svg Configure page layout.
  2. In the Configure page layout panel on the right, select the relevant carousel.
  3. Click plus.svg Add slide.
  4. Click plus.svg under Image.
  5. In the Select an image dialog box, click Import to upload a new image, or Reuse to pick an existing one. Use a JPEG, PNG, or GIF image of 1600x400 pixels for the poster layout, or 800x400 pixels for the postcard layout. For more recommendations, see Image sizes and ratios.
  6. Enter a Title (80 characters maximum).
  7. Enter a Description (150 characters maximum).
  8. In the Link field, enter a standard URL to redirect learners to a web page, or a mailto link (for example, mailto:recipient@domain.com) to open the learner's email client. You can use a free mailto generator like this one to generate a mailto link with multiple recipients, or with the subject line and the body pre-filled.
  9. Select the Layout:
    • Poster (default) displays a full-image slide with the text overlaid. If you add a link, learners can click anywhere on the slide to open it. This layout is supported on both web and mobile apps.
    • Postcard displays the image on the left and the text/button on the right. If you add a link, learners can click the image or the button to open it. This layout is supported only on the web app.
  10. If you selected the Postcard layout, enter the Button text (50 characters maximum). If you skip this, no button will display.
  11. In the bottom-right corner, click Apply.
  12. To continue editing the carousel, click chevron-left.svg Back to carousel at the top of the right panel.
  13. To close the right-side panel, click Close in the bottom-right corner.

The new slide is displayed in the carousel and is visible to everyone. To show it to specific learners only, see Select the audience of a carousel slide.

The amount of text displayed in the carousel depends on the users' browser window size, the zoom settings, and the newsfeed display status (right-panel expanded or hidden).
