Configure the layout of a group page

  • Updated

Who can use this feature?

  • Platform admins can configure the layout of the platform group and all groups.
  • Group admins can configure the layout of their own group pages.

Available on the Web Application.

A group page is made up of sections called widgets. You can add, reorder, and delete these widgets to customize the page.

You can add up to 300 widgets per page layout.

Widget types

Widgets are either configurable or non-configurable:

  • Configurable widgets:
    • You control their content (for example, text, images, filters).
    • If not configured, they remain hidden on the group page.
    • You can add configurable widgets multiple times within the same page layout.
  • Non-configurable widgets:
    • Content is generated automatically by the platform.
    • You can move or remove them, but not customize their content.

For more details on each widget, including which are configurable and non-configurable, see the list of widgets at the end of this article.

How layout inheritance works

When you add, delete, or reorder a widget in a group page:

  • Non-configurable widgets (and their position) propagate down the hierarchy until they reach a group with a saved layout.

  • Configurable widgets only appear on the page where you create them. Subgroups do not inherit them.

Manage group page layout across groups

Platform admins and group admins can copy page layouts across groups in two ways. The table below summarizes the key differences:

Apply layout to all subgroups Reset layout to default
Direction Pushes layout down to all subgroups ↓ Pulls layout up from parent group ↑
Non-configurable widgets Copied to subgroups Copied from parent
Configurable widgets Copied to subgroups Not copied from parent
Scope All subgroups This group + all non-customized subgroups
Future changes to source layout Do not apply automatically Apply automatically

Apply layout to all subgroups

Platform admins and group admins can apply a group's current page layout to all of its existing public and private subgroups across all levels.

When you apply a layout to all subgroups:

  • Pre-existing widgets: existing widgets in subgroups are permanently deleted.
  • Layout structure: the full page layout is copied to all subgroups at every level, not just direct subgroups.
  • Configurable widgets
    • Carousels, galleries, text, and HTML widgets: all content is duplicated.
    • Curated catalog: filter selections are copied. You must still publish content in each subgroup's catalog for it to appear in the group page.
  • Non-configurable widgets: placement is copied, but content (such as leaderboards) is pulled dynamically from each subgroup.
  • Audience filters: role-based and custom field filters are copied. Group-based filters are not carried over.
  • Schedule display: timing settings are copied for carousels, galleries, and curated catalogs.
  • Future changes: once applied, subgroup layouts are not linked to the original group. Future changes to the parent group's layout will not automatically update subgroups.
  • New subgroups: subgroups created after propagation do not automatically inherit the propagated layout. They follow standard layout inheritance rules from their parent group. For more information, see Group page layout after creation.

To apply a layout to all subgroups:

  1. In the left navigation panel, hover over a group, then click group-page-layout.svg Configure page layout.
    • If group-page-layout.svg Configure page layout doesn’t appear in your sidebar, click on the group first, then click group-page-layout.svg Configure page layout in the top right of the main section.
  2. At the top of the right-side panel, click Settings.
  3. Click Apply to all subgroups.
  4. In the dialog box, click Yes, apply to all subgroups.

Reset layout to default

Platform admins and group admins can reset a group's page layout to match its parent group's default layout.

When you reset a group page layout:

  • The layout mirrors the parent group's layout for non-configurable widgets only.
  • Configurable widgets are removed from the group layout and all non-customized subgroups.
  • The page layout of any non-customized subgroups also resets to match the parent group's layout.

To reset a group page layout:

  3. Click Reset to default.
    • The Reset to default button is not displayed on the platform group.
    • It is disabled if your group page already matches the parent group's layout for non-configurable widgets.
  4. In the dialog box, click Yes, reset to default.

List of widgets available on a group page

Platform admins and group admins can add, delete, and reorder the following widgets on a group page:

Configurable widgets

  • Carousel: Slideshow that can highlight content for learners, link to internal or external material, and convey a message with a call to action.
    • Group admins can configure multiple carousels on their group page. The content is not replicated in subgroups.
    • Learners can navigate the carousel using the arrows below each slide or pause the carousel to view content at their own pace. The carousel will also automatically switch to the next slide if not paused.
    • If no slides are added to the carousel, this section is hidden.
  • Curated catalog: Courses and paths available in the group catalog, filtered and sorted by the admin.
    • Group admins can configure multiple curated catalog widgets on their group page. The content is not replicated in subgroups.
    • The widget displays up to 20 results in the chosen sort order: alphabetical, most viewed, or most recent. Learners can click Find more to open the search page with the same filters applied.
    • If no courses or sessions in the group catalog are associated with the selected filters, the section is hidden.
  • Gallery: A series of image blocks, each with a brief caption and a hidden link. Up to 3 blocks in each row.
    • Group admins can configure multiple galleries on their group page. The content is not replicated in subgroups.
    • Learners can click each block to be redirected to the selected URL.
    • If no blocks are added to the gallery, this section is hidden.
  • HTML: A section for custom HTML and CSS, ideal for embedding unique visuals like custom banners or third-party content (for example, videos, maps) using iframes.
    • Group admins can add multiple HTML widgets per group page. The content is not replicated in subgroups.
    • CSS applied within a widget is scoped only to its content. It does not affect other page elements.
  • Text: A text block to create personalized messages for users, such as welcome notes or informational text blocks.

Non-configurable widgets

  • Courses: Most recent courses available in the group catalog, ordered by most recent creation date.
    • If admins set up an integration with third-party providers, those courses also appear here.
    • Learners can click the expander arrow to view up to 16 items, or click See all to access the search results page filtered on all available courses in the group catalog.
    • If no course is available in the group catalog, the section is hidden.
  • Leaderboard: Highest-ranked champions in the group. Learn more about champion ranking and viewing achievements.
  • Learning Needs: Highest-ranked Learning Needs. Learn more about Learning Needs ranking.
    • The Learning Needs feature must be enabled on the group.
    • Learners can click the expander arrows to view up to 16 items, or click See all to access the Learning Needs page.
    • If there is no Learning Need in the group, the section is hidden.
  • Paths: Most recent paths available in the group catalog, ordered by most recent creation date.
    • Learners can click on the expander arrows to view up to 16 items, or click See all to access the search results page filtered on all available paths in the group catalog.
    • If no path session is available in the group catalog, the section is hidden.
