Create a content custom field

  • Updated

Content custom fields are the association of a name and a value, similar to user custom fields.

Platform admins create the name of the content custom field and can define the list of values it can take (for restricted list fields). Anyone who can edit a course or a path session can assign a value to that content: either by picking from the restricted list, or by entering free text or a date, depending on how the field was set up.

Unlike tags, content custom fields are not visible to learners, and they can't be translated. They are only visible to roles who can edit content or build reports.

For example:

  1. A platform admin creates the content custom field name Activity, with the restricted values Training and Certification.
  2. An author opens the settings of a course and assigns the value Training to the custom field Activity.
    • The custom field will be displayed as Activity: Training.
  3. The author opens the settings of another course and assigns the value Certification to the custom field Activity.
    • The custom field will be displayed as Activity: Certification.

You can create up to 300 content custom field names. See Limitations →.

Create a content custom field

Platform admins can create content custom fields.

  1. In the left sidebar, hover over the platform group (the one with a golden crown), then click settings.svg Settings.
    • If settings.svg Settings doesn't appear in your sidebar, click on the platform group first, then click settings.svg Settings in the top right of the main section.
  2. In the left sidebar, click KeywordsContent Custom Fields.
  3. At the top right, click + Create custom field.
  4. In the dialog box, enter the name of the content custom field, for example Activity, then click outside the field to save.
  5. Under Format, select Text or Date.
  6. Under Entry, select:
    • Restricted list of values, if you want to define the values yourself and have users choose from that list when they assign the field.
    • Free text, if you want users to enter their own text or date when they assign the field.
  7. At the bottom right, click Create.

If you selected Free text, you're done: users who can edit a course or path session can now assign the field and enter their own value.

If you selected Restricted list of values, add at least one value, for example Training or Certification:

  1. Select the content custom field from the list.
  2. Click + Add value.
  3. Type the value, then click outside the field to save.

You can now assign this value to content, see Assign a custom field value to a course or a path session below.

Assign a custom field value to a course or a path session

As a platform admin

Platform admins can assign a value to any path session or course, including external courses synchronized into 360Learning through a content connector.

To assign a value as a platform admin:

  3. On the right of a value, click Assign.
  4. In the dialog box, select the courses or path sessions.
  5. Click Save.

You can remove content from the value by unselecting it at step 4.

Unlike user custom fields, content custom fields don't support batch assignment via CSV import.

When editing a course

Users who can edit a course can assign a value when editing that course. This doesn't apply to external courses synchronized into 360Learning through a content connector, since those can't be edited from 360Learning.

  1. At the top of the homepage, click Courses.
  2. On the right of the course row, click pen.svg Edit.
  3. Under Custom fields, click + Add custom fields.
  4. In the dialog box, select the content custom field.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Select the value for the custom field.
  7. Click Save.

When editing a path session

Users who can edit a path session can assign a value when editing that path session.

  1. At the top of the homepage, click Paths.
  2. On the right of a path, click pen.svg Edit.
  3. If there is more than one path session, select a session in the Sessions sidebar.
  4. Under Custom Fields, click + Add custom fields.
  5. In the dialog box, select the content custom field.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Select the value for the custom field.
  8. Click Save.

Filter content by custom field

  1. Above any content list (for example, the list available when clicking Courses at the top of the homepage), click Filter.

  2. In the Custom Fields section, select the custom field.

    • Selecting one or several values (or Select all) will only display content with one of the selected values.
    • If the custom field is a date, you can select a date range, and only content with a date value within that range will be displayed.
